Sunday School Notes: June 9, 2019

  1. Your first purpose in life is be loved by God.
  2. Your second purpose in life is to belong.

Hebrews 2:10

“God is the one who made all things, and all things are for His glory.  He wanted to have many children share in His glory.”

  • God formed me for His family.

Ephesians 1:9&10

“His unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into His own family by bringing us to Himself through Jesus Christ.”

  • God’s family is called the church.

1 Timothy 3:15

“I am writing to you… so you will know how to live in the family of God. That family is the church of the living God, the support and foundation of the truth.”

  • I’m called to belong to His church.

Ephesians 2:19

“So now you are no longer visitors or strangers.  Now you are citizens together with God’s holy people.  You belong to God’s family.

Romans 1:6

“You are among those who have been called to belong to Jesus Christ.”

Church is not something you go to.  Church is something you belong to.  It is not an event and it’s not a location.  Church is a relationship.

God designed His family, the church, to meet your five deepest needs.

  1. In God’s family I learn my true identity.

But the truth is, most of your identity comes from your relationships.

Ephesians 2:19

“You are members of God’s very own family… and you belong in God’s household with every other Christian.”

Your most important family is God’s family.

Your spiritual family is actually more important than your physical family.

When you get your identity from your spiritual family, then you get a long-term identity.

What matters most is your spiritual identity.

Hebrews 2:11

“Jesus and the people He makes holy all belong to the same family.  This is why He [Jesus] isn’t ashamed to call them His brothers and sisters.”

Baptism is the public symbol that says I’m not ashamed to say I’m a part of the family.

Acts 2

“Those who believed what Peter had said were baptized and added to the church about three thousand that day.”

The second metaphor that God uses to describe the church, He says the church is like a temple.

1 Corinthians 3:16

Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and His Spirit lives in you?”

In a building, all the connected parts support each other.

  1. In God’s temple I’m supported by others.

There are going to be times in your life when you need other people to hold you together.

Ephesians 2:21&22

“In Christ the whole [body] building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord.  And in Him [Jesus] you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit.”

You need identity and you need stability.

You weren’t meant to go through life disconnected.

Romans 1:12

“I want us to help each other with the faith we have.  Your faith will help me, and my faith will help you.”

This is what we call the mutuality of the body or the building of the family.

Your second purpose in life is to belong.
